So now that you know your child needs help to learn how to say sounds correctly, you can be your child's home therapist. Just follow this step by step guide to success!
1. If you had your child evaluated by a Speech Therapist, you should have a detailed evaluation report. It should list the sounds your child needs to develop. Which sound do you choose first?
2. Because so many factors influence how to begin therapy, YOU MAY WANT TO CONTACT OUR CERIFIED SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPIST for advice.
Call our Therapy Hotline at 412 337 1063 between the hours of 8am and 5pm EST.
Just Call! There's NO obligation.
3. If you are still not sure if your child needs an evaluation, just call for advice.
Articulation Therapy: Step By Step
Once we decide on the first sound to start with, we need to decide in which position of the word, initial, medial, or final, the target sound is easiest for your child to say.
There are 4 stages in sound therapy: Auditory Bombardment, Modeling, Spontaneous Production, and Conversation. You will proceed all the way through each stage with one position of the sound, first inital, then final, and then middle. You will reach an 80% level of mastery over three trials before moving on to the next stage. After you get the sound in isolation in each stage, then you will follow an order in each stage: word level, then sentence level, then conversation level.
During all stages in all positions of the sound in words, sentences, and conversation, vary your use of materials. Use word lists, the home practice videos, books, art projects, picture cards, the internet, and real objects. Words are all around us. Use words that are meaningful to your child. Keep your practice sessions to less than 15 minutes a day, and choose to make car rides a great time to "use your best sound".
